CleanTech San Diego, a non-profit, organizes companies operating in the cleantech space in San Diego. According to the organization, San Diego is now a recognized hub for cleantech companies and cleantech innovation with over 750 companies involved. The organization was created to “accelerate San Diego as a world leader in the clean technology economy.”
There is so much activity in cleantech, that in June 2010 San Diego received official recognition as a California Innovation Hub (iHUB) by Governor Schwarzenegger. This recognition results from the intense research, technology, economic, and entrepreneurial resources positioned in the region. The Hub covers San Diego and Imperial Counties and seeks to leverage assets to foster innovation and job creation by allowing application for federal funding.
The reality is that cleantech “hubs” or “clusters” are evolving in diverse domestic and international markets. Just in California, in addition to CleanTech San Diego, cleantech specific organizations have formed in Orange County, Los Angeles, and Silicon Valley. Internationally, groups are located Austria, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, and more. To meet the challenge of organizing international Clusters, Shawn Lesser of Sustainable World Capital launched the Global CleanTech Cluster Association (GCCA).
Significantly, the GCCA recognizes San Diego as a global cleantech cluster leader and chose San Diego as its North American home. The GCCA intends create value by identifying the most promising later stage companies as they are vetted and nominated through each individual member cluster. A diverse panel of judges then determines winners in specific categories. This process not only results in exposing the most promising new cleantech innovations, but serves to set the standard for future innovation as well.
Endsley + Associates is proud to be a part of the growing cleantech sector, uniquely positioned to handle business transactional and litigation needs, as well as real estate transactions with perspectives and understanding of cleantech, renewable energy, sustainable building, and carbon emissions.
